NEW AVANTASIA ALBUM TITLE REVEALED
In summer AVANTASIA’s ninth studio album will hit the stores. We have managed to catch Tobias for a brief interview in which he reveals the title of the new album exclusively here for avantasia.com.

Tobi, the new album is about to be finished. What are you currently up to?
Tobias: »Right now we are designing a limited edition book package with loads of additional content, liner notes, photos, an art book and I am deeply involved in all of it. I am a control freak but I want to offer fans nothing less than what I’d personally love to hold in hands. In our webshop we’ll offer limited vinyls in colors that I personally picked. Nothing is left to chance, I approach this as a fan and music enthusiast myself.«
Is the new album a conceptual continuation of your most recent effort »Moonglow«?
Tobias: »Yes, in a way it is that, but it’s far from being just more of the same. It’s new and fresh, a good mix of fantasy and poetry, but with each song having autobiographical chracteristics too. I am very proud of those lyrics, they mean a lot to me and even though they have a fantastic approach I reveal a lot about myself.«
What can you say about the new music?
Tobias: »It’s always hard to judge your own work when you’re still so close to it. Some of it is quite heavy, it clearly shows my Power Metal sides, not just as a writer but also as a vocalist. A friend of mine just said that some of the stuff sounds like my earlier stuff, Avantasia or Edguy at the turn of the millenium.«
Was that an intentional move?
Tobias: »No, it wasn’t at all. I guess it just happened because I was deeply involved in every tiny little step of the realization and production as in the earlier days. I was locked in at home and I had the time to deal with a lot of the details. It bears my trademarks and it’s a very personal album.«
Having run a band and a Metal Opera and supplied their material for so many years simultaneously, recently it seems to have been easier for you to write complex conceptual albums for Avantasia as opposed to more simplistic band albums for Edguy?
Tobias: »What is easier in a solo project is not the actual composing, but the realization of an idea, whereas in a band such as Edguy you often have to consider others more than yourself. That can be a difficult balancing act when you’re responsible for the outcome. The writing itself doesn’t make that much of a difference, a good song is a good song. I currently work with Avantasia because, as I previously said, Edguy had run out of steam. And believe it or not, that is absolutely not because of Avantasia. In a band not everyone walks in the same direction with the same intensity and that can dilute your creative power.«
So what else can you tell your fans about the new album?
Tobias: »The album is called “A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society“. At first our label was wondering if we couldn’t come up with a longer album title maybe (laughs). Given the attention span of the brave new world it’s not very memorable perhaps, but it’s the concept and the title was on my mind for quite a while. Most fans know that I have never taken the easy way just to deliver things bite-sized for what the market can handle. Our fans are smart enough to memorize the title. As an artist you need to follow your vision, otherwise you get an ulcer and ulcers kill creativity.«
Can you tell us anything about the guests?
Tobias: »There are many, some you would expect, some you would not expect. We’ll announce them in due time. But they all delievered. When I listen to the final master I am astounded myself how we could have come up with something as energetic and uplifting as this album in these two years of isolation.«
When is the album going to hit the stores?
Tobias: »This summer. We’ll do the anniversary shows in Europe and in between our hits we’ll probably throw in a couple of new songs here and there. And during the festival season the album should be released. Of course there’ll be some single prior to the album release.«
NEUES AVANTASIA-ALBUM – TITEL ANGEKÜNDIGT!
Im Sommer erscheint das neunte AVANTASIA-Album. Wir haben ein Gespräch mit Tobias geführt, in dem er uns hier exklusiv für avantasia.com den Albumtitel verriet.
Tobi, das neue Album ist fast fertig. Was machst Du im Moment gerade?
Tobias: »Derzeit arbeiten wir gerade an der Limited Edition, einer Buchversion mit viel zusätzlichem Material: Linernotes, Fotos und ein kleiner Kunstband in Buchform. Ich bin da ein bisschen Kontroll-Freak, aber irgendwie will ich den Fans etwas bieten, worauf ich auch persönlich stehe. In unserem Online-Store werden wir z.B. streng limitierte farbige Vinyls anbieten, die ich genau in diesen Farbkombinationen so herstellen lassen wollte. Nichts wird dem Zufall überlassen, ich bin ja selbst auch noch Fan und Musikenthusiast.«
Ist das neue Album eine konzeptionelle Fortsetzung Deines letzten Albums „Moonglow“?
Tobias: »Auf gewisse Weise ist es das, aber die Platte ist weit davon entfernt, alter Wein in neuen Schläuchen zu sein. Das Material ist sehr frisch, eine gute Mischung aus Phantasik und Poesie, bei der jeder Song auch autobiografische Züge hat. Ich bin gerade auch auf die Texte unheimlich stolz, denn trotz des phantastischen Rahmens gebe ich in den Texten sehr viel von mir preis.«
Was kannst Du zur neuen Musik verraten?
Tobias: »Es ist immer etwas schwierig, seine eigene Arbeit zu bewerten, wenn man noch so nah dran ist. Manches ist ziemlich heavy und zeigt ganz klar meine Power Metal-Seite, nicht nur als Komponist, sondern auch als Sänger. Ein Freund von mir hat vor kurzem gemeint, dass die neue Scheibe in weiten Teilen an meine älteren Werke erinnert, also Avantasia und Edguy um die Jahrtausendwende. «
War das Dein Plan?
Tobias: »Nee, war es überhaupt nicht. Ich schätze, das ist einfach so passiert, weil ich ziemlich tief in alle Schritte der Produktion im Detail eingebunden war, ähnlich wie früher. Ich war zuhause eingesperrt und hatte alle Zeit der Welt um mich endlos mit den Details zu beschäftigen. Man hört einfach meine Trademarks überall raus. Wie gesagt, das ist eine sehr persönliche Platte.«
Nachdem Du über viele Jahre eine Band und eine Metaloper parallel mit neuem Material versorgt hast, scheint es Dir in jüngerer Vergangenheit leichter zu fallen, komplexe Konzeptalben für Avantasia zu schreiben, als etwas einfachere Alben für Edguy.
Tobias: »Als Solokünstler kann man seine Ideen direkter umsetzen. In einer Band wie Edguy muss man den Belangen anderer oft mehr Raum schenken als den eigenen Bedürfnissen, was schwierig ist, wenn man die Verantwortung für das Resultat trägt. Beim Komponieren selbst gibt es kaum Unterschiede, ein guter Song ist ein guter Song. Momentan fällt mir die Arbeit mit Avantasia leichter, weil bei Edguy die Luft raus war, und ob man es glaubt oder nicht: Das lag nicht an Avantasia. In einer Band laufen manchmal einfach nicht alle mit der gleichen Intensität in die gleiche Richtung, und dann hemmt das die kreative Power.«
Was kannst Du sonst noch zum neuen Avantasia-Album verraten?
Tobias: »Das Teil wird den Titel „A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society“ tragen. Die Plattenfirma hat erstmal gefragt, ob wir nicht vielleicht noch einen längeren Titel zur Auswahl hätten (lacht). Naja, wenn man die Aufmerksamkeitsspanne der modernen Welt als Maßstab nimmt, ist der Titel vielleicht nicht ganz so einprägsam, aber er beschreibt nunmal das Konzept der Platte und geisterte mir schon eine ganze Weile im Kopf herum. Die meisten Fans wissen, dass ich nicht immer den bequemsten Weg wähle, um den Markt mundgerecht zu bedienen. Aber unsere Fans sind auch intelligent genug um sich so einen Titel zu merken. Als Künstler muss man seiner Vision folgen, sonst kriegt man Magengeschwüre, und die killen dann die Kreativität.«
Welche Gäste werden denn diesmal auf dem Album zu hören sein?
Tobias: »Da gibt es einige, die man erwarten konnte, und andere, die für Überraschungen sorgen werden. Wir kündigen das zu gegebener Zeit an. Aber ich kann schon sagen, dass alle einen tollen Job gemacht haben. Wenn ich mir die fertige Version des Albums anhöre frage ich mich selbst, wie wir in so schwierigen Zeiten in Isolation so ein erhebendes und powervolles Album abliefern konnten.«
Wann wird das Album in den Läden stehen?
Tobias: »Diesen Sommer. Wir werden die Jubiläumskonzerte in Europa spielen und dabei neben unseren Hits hier und da was neues einstreuen. Und während der Festivalsaison wird das Album dann irgendwann veröffentlicht. Aber natürlich wird es vorher auch Singles geben.«
